"First Turns"
Dec-20-09, 08:22 AM (EST)
It's a little frustrating, all of this new snow outside our house, the skis sharpened and waxed, the the SUV packed and ready to go, and there is no way we can escape Long Island today...

Last Sunday we drove to Vermont to ski Killington for two days, overdid it perhaps, and returned Wednesday. It was within about four degrees of freezing both days on the slopes. PSIA instructors were out in force, I guess learning more tricks of the trade. The trail count was 45, little or nothing groomed, and good cover. The visibility and snow conditions were best on Monday though. My trail of the day had to be Cascade, it had large, soft bumps the whole way down. East Fall and the North Ridge area were also good. We finished the day convinced we remembered how to ski, but not with the stamina we finished last season with. Last year we would ski the steeps in the canyon non stop, only resting on the K1 gondola. This year I had to make multiple stops on Snowshed, the beginners bunny slope.

Tuesday was very foggy with spring conditions. We spent time on Snowdon, a blue area. The fog was eerily thick, only two chairs ahead were visible on the lift. The fog was so thick it was almost dark out. The snow was very soft, but heavy, not a day to go fast. On one of the last runs we had the idea that we should go well out of the way to try a little used green run, upper royal flush. That was not such a great idea, as the temperatures dropped in the afternoon. It was breakable crust over wet snow, and very hard to turn in. Every other trail was good to ski, even if you could not see a thing. Like the previous day we skied to exhaustion.

Wednesday it was sunny but cold, maybe single digits on the hill. Our plan to ski until 2 pm and drive home was modified to just driving home. The muscles were still in knots, so why push it. We'll drive up again on Sunday and ski 'till Xmas... Who would have thought two feet of snow would keep us from the slopes?
