"New knee-protecting binding?"
Dec-29-08, 01:46 PM (EST)
Just saw this in the New York Times: http://travel.nytimes.com/2008/12/26/travel/escapes/26ski.html

It would be great if this new binding design, which releases laterally at the heel at well as the toe, actually helps prevent some ACL injuries. Anybody have any personal experience with this yet? The article says they are just now reaching some ski shops but are also available online. Pricey at over $400, but cheap if they prevent a ligament tear!

I still don't understand how a lateral release will help with a fully backward and upward force in the toe piece. My Look TC-07's (circa 1992 ) have an upward release in the toe for this very purpose - to eliminate an ACL injury.

And, at ~450 a pop, these new ones are about 4x as expensive as my antiques.

The thing that prevents ACL tears is upwards release at the toe. ...or use rear entry boots where the top buckle shears under load.
